Specific Phobias
A specific phobia is a kind of an anxiety
disorder based on a particular fear, like a fear of heights or
spiders. It is illogical, extreme and unrelenting and often
connected to experiences in childhood. Specific
phobias are so strong that they can lead to panic
attacks. Even though the object of the phobia may not be
anywhere near the sufferer, fear may still be felt. The mere
belief that it might be near or might occur in the future can
give rise to an attack.
Phobic fears are apt to fall into five major categories:
- Some things related to animals
- Natural environments
- Blood
- Injury
- A certain situation
Treatment is not always needed if you are able to keep away
from the feared situation, like avoiding going up high rise
buildings for fear of heights. However, it is not always so
easy and is very restraining. When the phobia starts to bother
your everyday life you should visit a doctor immediately, for
treatment options.
One of the most common treatments for specific
phobias is behavior therapy. In this therapy, the
person is gradually exposed to the situation or object of his
or her fears through visualization or pictures. Virtual reality
is a fairly new treatment and has been known to be very helpful
in conquering some specific phobias.
If a specific phobia is taking over your
life, a professional help is necessary. Even if you can never
be treated from your phobia, it is probable to lessen the fear
enough to be able to live ordinarily and have a fulfilling and
productive life.
